SAN FRANCISCO -- In another indicator that the semiconductor-equipment business is not improving, SEMI's book-to-bill ratio for North American-based tool suppliers is expected to be around 0.70-0.75--or flat--for November, according to estimates from Morgan Stanley Equity Research here today.

SEMI's official book-to-bill ratio is not expected to hit the streets until Thursday afternoon, but the figures may be gloomy. The 0.70-0.75 estimates compare to an official book-to-bill ratio of 0.71 for October, according to the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) trade organization of San Jose. The book-to-bill ratio for October was far cry from when the market peaked a year ago, according to SEMI (see Nov. 20 story ).

Meanwhile, the three-month average of worldwide bookings is estimated to be $600 million in November of 2001, a 7.8% drop from September and a 77.8% decline from the like period a year ago, according to Morgan Stanley.

The three-month average of worldwide billings is projected to hit $825 million in November, a 10% drop from September and a 65.9% decline from a year ago, according to Morgan Stanley.
