Headline: Compaq Expands Armada 1500 Value Notebook Family with New U.S. Retail
Model Armada 1585DMT Enhances Commitment to Small and Medium Business Users

======================================================================
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- June 30, 1997 -- Continuing its
commitment to address the unique needs of small and medium business
customers, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced a
new retail-specific addition to its popular Armada 1500 notebook
family, the Armada 1585DMT. The new notebook PC is specifically
designed for business customers who buy at retail and seek a high
quality notebook PC with expanded ease-of-use and desktop
functionality at very competitive price points.
Announced today at a press conference in New York City, the
Armada 1585DMT merges ease-of-use and integrated multimedia
capabilities with the power and performance of an Intel Pentium
processor with MMX technology. The new Armada portable PC features
an active matrix color display, enhanced network support, Intelligent
Manageability, support for Windows NT 4.0 and user programmable
buttons. The Armada 1585DMT is available today through traditional
Compaq retail outlets. In addition, all models of the popular Armada
1500 Series can be purchased through leading mail order resellers,
including CDW, PC Connection and MicroWarehouse.
"Capitalizing on the broad commercial success of the Armada family
of notebook PCs, it's a natural extension to offer this model at
retail for business customers who need to access, manage and create
information," said Mike Winkler, Senior Vice President and Group
General Manager, PC Products Group, Compaq Computer Corporation.
"This announcement personifies Compaq's commitment to the small-and
medium-sized business customer who requires powerfully engineered
notebooks with excellent price/performance and integrated
multimedia."

Compaq's Armada 1585DMT: The Fully Integrated Business Notebook

Built to include everything a business person needs to access and
manage information while on the road, the Compaq Armada 1585DMT
offers customers a 33.6K/14.4 data/fax modem, 12X Max CD-ROM drive-(1),
removable diskette drive and an integrated AC adapter.
The new Armada 1585DMT is priced at $3,699-(2), and comes standard
with a 150 MHz Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology,
delivering business customers the speed and multimedia capabilities
for on-the-road and in-the-office tasks. The new model features a
large 12.1-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Active Matrix Flat-Panel
display, 16 MB of EDO memory (expandable to 80 MB), a 2.1 GB hard
drive and an Enhanced Smart Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. The
Armada 1585DMT also features a dual function bay, making it easier
for customers to remove the diskette drive and replace it with an
optional second Enhanced Smart NiMH Battery for longer lasting PC
power.
The Armada 1585DMT offers multimedia users the PremierSound Audio
System that includes integrated stereo speakers with high-power and
low distortion amplifiers for high fidelity sound. A built-in
microphone is also included.
The entire Armada 1500 family, announced in April, comes bundled
with Intelligent Manageability, fully integrated AC adapter, NiMH or
Lithium Ion (LiIon) batteries, and dual installation support of both
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 95. The Armada 1585DMT also
supports the simultaneous use of dual batteries, providing up to six
hours of battery life.-(3)
One of the key advantages of the Armada 1500 Series is its
network compatibility and an overall emphasis on lower cost of
ownership. Like all Armada 1500 Series models, the Armada 1585DMT is
rigorously tested by Compaq to operate in multiple connectivity and
network environments. In addition, the Armada 1585DMT includes a
"dual install" version of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 that allows
users to choose the specific operating system they intend to use,
eliminating the need for additional purchases. The Armada 1585DMT
Series includes support for Compaq's popular Intelligent
Manageability capability, which allows network users to track and
manage clients in enterprise-wide environments. An optional
convenience base/monitor stand with integrated Ethernet support is
also available for users who require desktop expansion and port
replication.
