San Jose International Boosts Number of X-Ray Machines, Magnetometers

Mineta San Jose International prior to Thanksgiving added x-ray machines and magnetometers to increase the capacity of the security checkpoints in the airport’s two terminals.

According to Steve Luckenbach, communications manager for the airport, addition of the screening equipment required some remodeling in Terminal C. Officials removed a wall and relocated the security badging office to the mezzanine level, which allowed room for the additional x-ray machine and metal detector. Early in 2002, the airport will undertake some remodeling in Terminal A related to enhancing the security checkpoint.

Luckenbach said the airport is now finalizing a plan to meet the Jan. 18 full baggage screening deadline. The airport presently has two CTX-5500 explosives detection systems, one in each terminal, and both are in use.

Airport officials are also planning to reconfigure the checkpoints so screening procedures will be the same. That is expected to take place in early January.

Officials are researching access control technology now on the market, Luckenbach said, but no decisions have been made in favor of any particular system. The airport currently has a computer controlled access card system.
