Re: This great scaling is partly due to the larger L2 cache, but the largest factor is in the platform.

My goodness, has Scott McNealy killed Wanna_bmw and take over his SI account?

:-)

(just kidding)

Remember, that when we say "platform", for the most part we are talking about the disk subsystems and NIC performance that are plugged in to the system (as much as all the guys selling $1 million dollar refrigerator boxes would like you to think it's something specific to their box).

Plug a Celeron (or, as of this month, a Duron) into a 64/66 board equipped with 4 gig RAM, a dozen 10K drives on a 3 channel controller and and dual channel gigabit NIC and watch how it performs on "server" tasks.

By 64/66 I mean 64 megabit 66megaherts PCI slots. Such a board (together with the cards installed in it) constitutes the "platform" and the platform specific board adds about $100 to the cost of the system.

The RAS stuff is another story, and does add to platform specific costs, but this started out as a price/performance discussion. If RAS were the primary concern, then a buyer would stick with a proven SUN or IBM solution instead of a dot zero "I wanna sell big Iron too" attempt from Dell.
