SGS-THOMSON debuts multimedia consumer PC on a chip
SAINT GENIS POUILLY, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1997 SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics (NYSE:STM; Bourse de Paris) has developed a high performance multimedia PC on a single chip. Known as the ST PC Consumer, the chip integrates a high performance processor with all the functions needed to develop low-cost, PC based consumer systems. The ST PC Consumer chip is the first of a family of differentiated, x86-based standard devices tailored to specific applications, such as network computers, web browsers, industrial control systems, and other applications that require Windows(TM) compatibility implemented on a cost-effective platform. "We worked closely with a number of customers to develop this chip. There is significant opportunity for this product and its successors to create products that simply do not exist today. By creating a PC on a chip that offers unequaled price and performance, we are positioning the PC for totally new applications," said Piero Martinotti, Corporate Vice President of SGS-THOMSON's New Ventures Group. "Ideas such as educational PCs, PC game consoles, in-flight entertainment systems, and TVs with PC functionality all become feasible with this product," he continued. By integrating the necessary PC functions required for DOS and Windows compatibility with other features such as graphics, TV- compatible output and video sub-system, customers can dramatically cut the component cost for low-cost PC-based consumer systems. The ST PC Consumer chip integrates around 2.5 million transistors into a single device. It is priced at less than $40 in large volumes, compared to a total cost of more than $80 for currently available chips that implement the same set of functions. SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics is a global independent semiconductor company listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on the Bourse de Paris. It designs, develops, manufactures and marketsa broad range of semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) and discrete devices used in a wide variety of microelectronic applications, including telecommunication systems, computer systems, consumer products, automotive products and industrial automation and control systems. ______________________________________________________ Interesting chip? I wonder what kind of speeds it operates at?
Carl, I was sorry to read about the stupid bigotry you've had to deal with. Maybe that's one of the reasons the Internet and this forum is so popular and alluring. Everyone is simply known by their thoughts and idea's. We can all leave that kind of baggage in the dumpster.
