I'm not authoritative, but I think they've probably used an assortment of hardware over the years, both for running the business and for doing software development. As I recall, I heard at the time that Windows was written using a variety of Unix on NEC machines. You may recall that Microsoft once sold a Unix lookalike called Xenix. There are reports that the back end of Hotmail still is Unix based.

There are lots of "strange bedfellows" in the industry. I believe Sun has bought parts from IBM, and I believe they once (still?) ran part of their manufacturing line using PCs. I've heard Intel runs its manufacturing using DEC Alpha computers. I believe Dell once (still?) ran part of their operations on Sun Solaris. Likewise for Motorola and AMD. The bottom line is that the marketing hype stops at the door in many of these companies, and they try to fit the tool to the job, just like in the "real world."

All JMHO.
