Have you considered the possibility that a substantial portion of the current account deficit got obliterated when the bubble burst? We had all of these foreigners who loaned us their money so we could purchase merchandise overseas.

They took our green dollars and bought shares in companies at 5000 NAZ. A year later the same shares can be had for 1900 NAZ. Up and until then the US dollar was risking a run against it whenever foreign investors decided to start withdrawing their dollars.
