The businesses mostly interested in a Transporter type solution are very far away from each other and use it frequently.
Rationale:
Distance and Frequency are the keys: How far the recipient is away from me and how frequently I have to make deliveries. (OK security has to be in the equation too)

If I have a lot of very important data to carry across town and I need proof of flawless delivery, I just put into the trunk of my car and deliver it my self. If frequent, I can accommodate within my moving around town.
PROBLEM: Since carry is perceived as cheap pretty soon I would buy a new car taking into consideration this secondary use and be buying a van.

If it would S. Paulo -400Km away- I would send via SEDEX (express courier run by the Post Office.) If it would be to Colorado, then I would have to start thinking. I just had to know a bit about how SEDEX works (last time deliver to leave the same day, tariff structure such as how much I can send by basic rate and such).
PROBLEM: I have to adhere to SEDEX time table, I have to pack properly and address it and still have to go to their office to post it.

Now if it is Colorado, things start getting much complicated. When a complication reaches a certain degree, -(humans being what they are) they seek alternatives. That is the important point. WHEN THINGS START GETTING REALLY COMPLICATED. Should I consider electronic deliver? I would gladly get rid of the electronic-to-physical media conversion that I'm forced to to send via the means used above.
I would get rid of wasting time tracking content, I would get an instant transfer. Beautiful!

While I could calculate the costs (and control them) of physical transfer of data, the electronic -or lest call it soft transport- is more complicated: I have to actually own the soft transfer system. I have to invest on the data transport infrastructure. Beyond the tape or CD writer I had before for electronic-to-physical conversion operated by non-specialized work.

To be continued...
