White House not encouraged on stimulus talks

WASHINGTON, Dec 20 (Reuters) - The White House said on Thursday it was not encouraged about the possibility of a deal soon with Senate Democrats on an economic stimulus plan after Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill talked to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.

The White House remained willing to listen to Democratic views on the legislation and was hoping to obtain a bill that can pass the Democrat-controlled Senate, following approval early Thursday morning of a plan by the Republican-dominated House of Representatives.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that at President George W. Bush's direction, O'Neill spoke by phone to Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat.

He said O'Neill indicated a willingness to work together to reach an agreement on health care provisions for unemployed workers -- a key issue in the current impasse over a package to stimulate the economy following the Sept. 11 attacks.

``The secretary was surprised to hear that now everything needs to be rediscussed, it's not just the health issues that are a source of concern in the Senate among the Democrats. They now seem to be indicating that there's no agreement on anything,'' he said.

``he word in the Senate is not as encouraging, but the president continues to believe it's vital for the Senate to take action to help protect the economy, to help workers so they don't lose their jobs and to give a helping hand to people who have already lost theirs,'' he said.
