You make some interesting points, but I see that you actually ignored the thrust of the quoted comments.

The author was arguing that Wealth Disparity - the spread between the richest and the poorest wealth cohorts in our population - was becoming worse.

This long term fact was not addressed at all by the quotes you posted from Cato....

Also, (in the Cato excerpts you posted), they were merely comparing the '80s to the '70s... a pretty laughable comparison as the '70s were a totally miserable decade as far as economic performance. Two oil shocks, stagflation, wage and price freezes, rising foreign competition, all resulted in the equity markets finishing up the decade pretty much where they started.

I could win every race if I compared myself to a turtle, too!
