Heatsinker: It sounds like a very simplistic view of the market by Intel and an Intel in denial about the potential of the hammers. In reality, I believe there are many desktop number crunching applications that could benefit from 64 bits. Also, just like Mhz sells, I think 64 bit will have status appeal as well.

Maybe the response was somewhat colored by the question. Hammer isn't really going up against Itanium. Hammer is going up against P4 Xeons. Itanium is competing in a totally different space, with Alpha, Sun and, partly, Power4.

Yes, there is some overlap, but Intel proved that x86 servers, both 1-way and higher, have a place. AMD is gunning right for that market and by all indications has a very enticing package.
