Scott: Comments on defense and "The Pentagon is in good hands" u referenced.....

Good info. Thanks.

I remember the first day President Reagan took office. We live near an air base. The big C-130's fired their engines up on alert that first day. Could hear them miles away. Think he told all our bases to stand ready. He got them in the air and they stayed in the air. I don't recall many days at all during the Reagan years that I didn't hear those big C-130's running down there on the tarmac when I stepped out on the deck, day or night. We can see the airstrip from our ridge line and the 130s bank over our house on their training flights.

I've talked to a lot of C-130 pilots over the years, along with missile silo operators. Talk about dedicated. Fierce. I admire them. Our house is rather distinct and Mrs. RR always said they used our house as a mark to start their banks. I asked several of them that and they confirmed it. It is always great to see those big things out the den windows just over the hollow with their wings tilted, belly showing, making a sharp bank to the air strip. When flying low sometimes, they shake the house. I've been out in the field when they've come roaring over the ride line so close they'd wave.

They would tell me stories about those big C-130's. They get up in the northern part of the state, not heavily populated, up in the mountains, and they would practice flying 50 feet above the tree tops. Sometimes they could hear the trees scrap the underbelly. Unreal... yet they loved it. They were good and they knew it.

During the Reagan and Bush terms, those plans flew all the time. Our family use to could tell when we were close to home by seeing the lines of those C-130's in the air.

During the Clinton years, the planes went silent. Many days passed and we never ever saw a plane in the air.

Let's see, of course Reagan told those folks over in Iran that he was going to come get our hostages back if he won the election, too. And, he got them released, didn't he.

Oh, just pondering the past....
