TGPTNDR, Re: "Itanium launched after 7 years!"
Yeah, but it's not like we have anything to compare that to. How many companies have come up with totally new and different architectures, and aim to use them to build a high volume software and platform infrastructure from the ground up, all in the face of an already crowded market. I mean, x86 came about naturally because it was one of the first instruction sets to get a broad software support. It was also very lucky. MIPS has been around for ages, and its "open source" licensing made it very popular academically. Alpha and others RISC architectures capitalized on the shortcomings of a primitive CISC x86 architecture, and would have succeeded, too, if CISC hadn't improved in later years. So, really, how many companies have done what Intel has done? It took them 7 years, but there isn't really anything comparable, IMO.
