Nadine, I follow the francophone press, and the US is rabidly pro-Israel compared with France, who has great influence in what the European Union does in the matter.

It's true the French adore the Palestinians, but any latent anti-semitism plays a very minor role in this. If you observe the functioning of French society, there are constant labor union strikes, and in spite of the almost stupefying inconvenience the general population suffers from these, there's a overall support for the strikers. It's an accepted way of life, and I'm convinced the disorder and struggle in the mid-east strikes a chord.

It's not rational, based on the real dynamics of the situation, but it's an important background on why Europe will come forward and support Arafat come hell or high water. However Europe will be mostly talk in the end.

Are Arafat's recent speeches on-line (in English, or maybe better Arabic - I could ask a friend to tell me what was said.)
