If foul play, the simplest response is: he knew too much. Either (a)how to produce or (b) how to identify the source(s) of production, either personally knowing individuals or processes.

Unless a random killing or hidden personal problem, a casual observeration would point to his unique skills as a prime reason for his elimination. In his case, that involves specific disease microbes and processes, and maybe people who don't wish to be linked to recent Antrax or upcoming events. Whether the FBI investigates in this direction or not is another question.
