There is no automatic assumption that one decade will be superior to the next. Especially if the superiority of the next decade involves the curing of problems in the earlier one, comparisons are valid.

Energy prices fell, stagflation remained. Only the Volcker recession drove it out, and even that was not a lead pipe cinch. Stagflation was cured by Reagan's policies.......
