Stocks To Watch : Firmly favorable bias noted in pre-market trading. Several stocks have been of interest in the wake of earnings news and positive comments from the Street. Manugistics (MANU +2.26) beat its consensus and issued issued a positive preannouncement for Q4. WR Hambrecht upgraded to BUY from Neutral based on improving fundamentals and competitive position and CSFB raised its targets. Western Digital (WDC +0.54) raised guidance for the Dec qtr on both the top and bottom line. JP Morgan upgraded to BUY from Long-Term Buy and upped its estimates; believes volume uptick from Xbox, market share gain from Fujitsu, and uptick in overall PC demand is sustainable. Ariba (ARBA +0.64) is up significantly on a percentage basis this morning amid reports that IBM will offer Ariba's purchasing software as a paid-for service over the Internet. Cognos Inc (COGN +1.92) reported better than expected earnings last night; Merrill Lynch and DB Alex Brown, among others upgraded this morning. THQ Inc (THQI +2.10) Goldman Sachs initiates coverage with a RECOMMENDED LIST rating and $65 price target; suggests has powerful licensed brands, a strong balance sheet with no debt. Liberate Tech (LBRT +1.23) reported better than expected earnings last night, CSFB makes positive comments this morning; sees company as extremely well-positioned despite MSFT threat, should break even in 2003 but believes reasonably valued at this time. -- Jim Schroeder, Briefing.com
