The last time rates reached these levels was in 1998 when U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett squeezed the silver lending market, pushing lease rates up to 35 percent and forcing the spot price up to a high of $8.00 an ounce.

Silver capitalised on the constricting lease rates, and the price movement was expected to remain erratic, with more advances on cards, traders said.
