Hamas has ordered a halt to suicide bombings and mortar attacks on Israel.

Not accurate from what I've heard...Hamas ordered a halt to suicide bombings within Israel; it's still open season in the territories.

[NC:.. Possible good news?.. pb]

Hamas implemented some of Arafat's previous "cease-fires" the same way. Not big news of itself. Of more interest is the fighting between Hamas and the PA Police in Gaza; any serious move by Arafat against Hamas would spark off internecine fighting; this fighting shows that he has at least begun to get serious, as opposed to the mere play-acting he has done until now. But all bets still say that Arafat will spark two days of fighting, do some back-room deal with Hamas to get them to hush up for the moment, then demand payment from the Western Powers for his good behavior.

The Hamas move is a victory for Yasser Arafat, who announced a ban on attacks against Israel during a speech on Sunday, calling them "terrorist activity" for the first time.

Yeah, then two days later Arafat gave a speech in Ramallah where he praised the importance of "martyrs" in Jerusalem, saying one there is worth seventy elsewhere...of course ananova didn't cover that speech.
