He can't help it:

1) In his position, you have to mount an opposition to hold the party base.

2) The base is still listening to the Clinton crackpot braintrust: Carville/Begala/Greenberg, who tell them class warfare and racial hatred are their only hope.

These people will keep selling those themes until the voters vigorously reject them. Only then can the Democratic party pursue it's long-term survival by rejecting the left and returning to it's mildly socialist/populist roots.

Bush was gradually defeating this obsolete political movement before September 11. The tragedy had the effect of advancing that by many months, possibly years. The chances of the Dems running successfully on the theme of a "Bush recession" were slim before-but had hope, given the Marxian leanings and general economic ignorance of the establishment media. Those chances are now absolutely zero with the latest stimulus-killing stunt by Tom Daschle.

But it's all the Democrats could do. Without their base, where are they?...
