The White House said on Friday that the attack on Indian Parliament was aimed at harming Pakistan and its growing relations with the United States. The News..

Spokesman Ari Fleischer told the last briefing of 2001 that the attack was also aimed at Indian democracy and hurting Indian leaders. Fleischer said President Bush had full confidence that President Musharraf would take action against Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e- Mohammed outfits.

Analysts here said President Bush, while ordering the freeze on the assets of Lashkar-e-Taiba, had tried to exonerate Pakistan government of any responsibility by stating that the group was a "stateless sponsor of terror, based in the disputed Kashmir region."

The Lashkar, he said, "hopes to destroy relations between Pakistan and India and to undermine Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf." Reuters adds: A senior State Department official said on Friday that in their latest dispute, India and Pakistan had so far acted responsibly. He said that Washington was maintaining "very intense dialogues" through its New Delhi and Islamabad embassies and noted that the tension had not escalated into military action.
