no John D made out ok. It Rockefeller and Henry Flagler were able to use their geographic location of Cleveland on Lake Erie to secure better transportaion rates from the railroads because they could ship their product via water to the east coast and europe during most of the year.

They were also able to play the 3 railroads that went from Cleveland to the east coast against each other to get better shipping rates. The Pennsyvania Railroad, The New York Central and the Erie Railroad. The Pennsyvania RR was determined to put the cleveland refiners out of business and that helped to spark an interest in the other two lines to give the bery best rates to Rockefeller, Andrews and Flagler, as the partnership was called at the time.
