Fired Scientist Not Focus of Anthrax Probe

[Note: This directly contradicts my earlier post. It seems like 3/4 of the anthrax stories out there are denied a few days later. -Snowshoe]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal law enforcement officials denied Thursday a news report that the investigation into the deadly anthrax attacks focused on a senior research scientist who was twice fired from a company that produces the deadly bacterium.

ABC News reported that the scientist, once employed at the Battelle Company, an anthrax-producing facility in Columbus, Ohio, made a threat to use anthrax in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.

The officials said they were not focusing on one individual who had been fired from Battelle. Investigators ``looked into it and I believe it washed out,'' one official said.

The FBI (news - web sites) has been investigating the anthrax attacks that have killed five people. Anthrax-tainted letters were sent to two U.S. senators and to the news media after the Sept. 11 hijacked plane attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites).

Five people have died from inhalation anthrax since early October and 13 have been infected.

The officials emphasized the investigation had not narrowed in on a suspect.
