There was no census taken in Palestine between 1922 and the formation of
the state of Israel. The issue of the pre-1948 population of non-Jews has
been very controversial, because of its link to the number of refugees.
The above 1949 and 1988 population data are from the Israeli statistical
yearbook, the earlier data are from Palestinian Perspective. The range of
the estimates of the number of Palestinian refugees immediately after 1948
is from 500 thousand to one million. Today it is said that there are 2.5
million Palestinian refugees.
