The range of the estimates of the number of Palestinian refugees immediately after 1948 is from 500 thousand to one million.

Most historians say somewhere in the range 575,000 to 675,000. I've heard more estimates at the lower end of the range. Remember, not all the pre-1948 Arab inhabitants lived in boundaries of what later became Israel; it's estimated that about 750,000 of the 1.2 million did.

Today it is said that there are 2.5 million Palestinian refugees.

Depends who you listen to. UNWRA lists 3.7 million, but there's a stipend associated with being on that list so each birth is reported five times and once on the list, you're immortal, officially speaking. But I've still heard Arafat claim 5 million and Edward Said claim 7 million.
