SpeechWorks and OTS Technology Launch China's First Speech-Enabled 'Smart Telephone Directory'
First Mandarin-Language Speech Recognition Application for Telco Industry in China
SHENZHEN, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 20, 2001-- SpeechWorks International, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPWX - news), a global leader in speech recognition and text-to-speech (TTS) technologies and services, and Chinese partner, OTS Technology Pte. Ltd. (OTS), in conjunction with China Yellow Page Company (Shenzhen Branch) and Shenda Telephone Company, Ltd. today launched China's first speech-enabled `Smart Telephone Directory,' to provide over-the-phone directory assistance information for more than 80,000 listed numbers in the Shenzhen region.
The `Smart Telephone Directory' is the first speech-enabled application for the Chinese telecommunications industry. Callers in Shenzhen can reach the `Smart Telephone Directory' by dialing (86) 755-363-2222.
The new Mandarin-language service, designed to provide directory assistance information for Shenzhen's businesses and government organizations, uses speech recognition technology to understand callers' spoken words and provide answers on command. The `Smart Telephone Directory' is powered by state of the art, automated speech recognition technology developed by SpeechWorks International.

The `Smart Telephone Directory' system is the first Yellow Page service using advanced automated speech recognition technology. Utilizing the OTS-VOST2001 platform, callers may easily access information and conduct transactions 24 hours a day with improved efficiency and effectiveness by reducing service limitations such as capacity and hierarchical searching.
