fyo, The most common successful european companies are based on monopolies. In general they cannot compete in a commodity business, like PCs, since their management and work forces are over paid and overly deep. Many struggled on the fat government contracts, like Bull and Olivetti, but instead of using that good gov business to rebuild the company they squandered it in empire building.

Phillips is the same way over here. They closed down their PC operation after losing close to 1 billion $.
I had friends who worked there and they told me horror stories of how detailed and tortuous the research and development procurement system was. The staff asked for state of the art stuff and got it 2 years later....not state of the art any more.
Phillips deliberately made every part of their PCs non standard so that all replacement parts had to be bought at their inflated prices. Of course their clients voted with their brains and even forced Canadian government purchases were not good enough to keep them afloat. Honeywell-Bull. Olivetti was something similar I am sure.

Now there are some conpanies that run euro SD shops and they are doing OK and are giving Dell a black eye, as well as HP/IBM/CPQ.

I am sure there are some US corporations that buy Dell?HP/IBM/Compaq, and some governments, but small corporations and people are buying from SD shops and white box assemblers like the ones that supply the euro supermarket chains.

Compaq is finished if this deal with HP fails(as it seems it will)

Compaq has that same topheavy management and procurement structure that hurt IBM and HP.

The only solution for those guys is to completely emulate the Dell model today. This will not happen, the management there owes too many old boys a living and those same old boys will slowly suck the life out of Compaq.

HP and IBM, at least have some life left with areas that make money.

Intel has some aspects of those failing euro companies, a top heavy management full of old boys who are eating moe than they earn. Intel also has a 'management by persecution' system that did make them lean and mean in the old days, but now it has eveloved into a bunch of turtles who cover each other against attack.
