another basis:
he had a full week to plan his escape as troops were slowly closing in on him and Kandahar
what? he sees them coming and stands staked to the ground like a Sioux warrior, claiming "today is a good day to die"
he had days to jump the back door in ToraBora as his Rear Guard troops fought and died at the cave entrances
and escape is exactly what he did
