MPB,

Excellent, though a little technical, description of atherosclerotic process. You are the master of the Abstract.

As to the initiating factor, several culprits have been proposed: viral infection, high blood pressure, cigarette smoke, and yes squetch, BLT's. MLNM scientists have also proposed that the fact that plaques are only observed in certain portions of the arteries may be due to another group of genes which appear to be sensitive to differences in the shear stress exerted on the artery wall. Under this model, the turbulence at branches and sharp curves is necessary for plaque formation. MLNM had a paper in PNAS (v93:19) outlining this.

Interesting to note with this work is who MLNM partnered BioTherapeutics with...Lilly, who they have a collaboration on atherosclerosis with (also oncology). Would Lilly do that without alot of promise in MLNM's work to date in those areas?

BTW, squetch, congrats on both breathing life into this thread and being the 20th post.
