Gerstner first worked for the McKinesly (sP?) law firm. Then went to American Express to head the credit card business. He was largely reponsible for "Membership has its privelages" campaign that got hammered (after he had left) by Mastercard/Visa. He then turned his attention to RJR that was bought by KKR. He is responsible for reducing the huge debt that came with the takeover, and for pushing high-brand cigerettes when low brands were stealing market share. I believe after a three month search and numerous rejection by others, Gerstner was named CEO of IBM. His first day I believe was April Fools Day. Ironic isn't it considering that many believed he had absolutely no experience in technology. Of course Gerstner disagrees, slightly. It wasn't until roughly a year and a half latter that IBM's shares gradually increased. If I recall the shares fell from the 50's to the 40's during this time period. I have never heard of KKR buying a major stake in IBM and thus installing Gerstner. This doesn't make sense since Gerstner was probably IBM's fifth or sixth choice. I guess its a good thing IBM didn't get Sculley.

Lotus was bought in the summer of 1995 for 3.3 billion, and Trivioli last year. According to Gerstner technology is entering the Third Wave where networking is the key. Gerstner has stated that he saw the power of the network as early as 1993 yet couldn't do anything due to his cost cutting and reorganization. I find this interesting since it wasn't until 1995 that Bill Gates saw the power of networking/Internet.

PS - If you didn't notice, I follow Gerstner's moves very closely.
