Copied Mark Madden's price report from Yahoo Maxtor board.

-------------------------------------------------------

Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing from a sample of retail distributor drives. The samples include 287 drives from 5 different distributors.

The average sample of desktop disk drives prices remained stable last week.

Average price change this week (weekly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 0.3%
Less than 21gb --- down 0.2%
21gb to 51gb --- down 0.4%
Greater than 51gb --- down 0.3%
Enterprise --- even 0.0%

Current Quarter price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.5%
Less than 21gb --- down 1.9%
21gb to 51gb --- down 2.2%
Greater than 51gb --- down 4.0%
Enterprise --- down 0.7%

Third Quarter 2001 price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.9%

Second Quarter 2001 price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.7%

First Quarter 2001 price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.4%

Fourth Quarter 2000 price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 0.7%

With only 4 business days left in the quarter it is safe to say pricing drops have slowed for the first time in four quarters. The price erosion is modest considering shifting sales to 40 GB platters that reduce costs of manufacturing drives.

Most significantly the prices of desk top drives in the 21 GB to 51 GB range dropped an average of 2.2% per month. June and September quarters dropped 3.0% and 2.8% respectively. As the largest category of sales, this category is important for earnings and may indicate demand strength in this area. Demand strength in turn shows a shifting of demand to higher priced and higher margined drives. It is these factors that will give us higher unit prices and greater profits.

Regards,
Mark
