Is a Canadian not an American?

The language we have available is unfortunately limited. We are the United States of America. It would seem really weird to call ourselves United Statsians or United Statists. So we say Americans. I first realized the problem with this when I was a student in Mexico City in 1962. Of course, Mexico had a way of dealing with the problem of distinguishing us from Latin Americans. United Statsians were simply called Gringos. Canadians kind of got lost in that, it seemed. Too bad our forefathers, with their great wisdom and foresight, didn't pick a more usable name for our country. But they were hung up on federalism, not ease of expression.

Are we beginning to think of Canada as a suburb of the USA?

I definitely consider Canadians my countrymen in spirit. It's unthinkable to treat them as foreigners. Whether or not that's a good thing for Canadians remains to be seen.
