TD:

"Hey - 3 hours from now it is Christmas - so screw them - let's celebrate!"

Where do you live, Truk? We've got another 16 hours or so of Christmas Eve here on the Left Coast.

It may shock and appall those (current and former) denizens of NYC and Boston, but the vast majority of the USA is neither a Yankees nor a Red Sox fan, although I shocked and appalled my west coast comrades by cheering via television for the Yankees against Mariners and the Diamondbacks this year (after 9/11, who wasn't a Yankees fan, at least for this season?).

I lived in greater Boston for about 6 years, went to some Bosox games, could never really understand the fever. Funny thing, the fans there looked just like visitors to Disneyworld, just a bunch of people fooled into thinking they were having a great time, when in fact they were sitting on uncomfortable bleachers, eating overpriced food you'd never have even in your house (cooling hot dogs, flattish beer) getting a sunburn near the Green Monster.

When I lived in NYC, I went to a Yankees game (1984 I think), took the subway up, endured the crowds, the sweating and the swearing. The subway lost power on the way back to midtown and we sat, close to midnight, in sweltering darkness, with (one supposes) career criminals and infrequent bathers for about 15 minutes. My visit to the House That Ruth Built.

Crowded stadium sports remind me of the guy (Foster Wallace) who wrote about taking a Caribbean cruise one time: "Another Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again."

Pax vobiscum, of course, and Happy Holidays to all.
