I stand corrected- - somewhat. This is somewhat like joining a wife-swapping club, but insisting on remaining a virgin.
A uniquely distinct nation such as France, who was a great power once upon a time, does not willingly become an underling without some struggle. Nations, like people, do not wish to simply fade away into the nursing homes of human affairs.
As I pointed out, Britain handled this quite well. So did, say, the Netherlands, which used to be a world power,
Americans, of all people, ought to be able to understand the appeal of nationalism. If Europe became a unified world power which dominated America in economic and cultural ways, well, the Americans would not simply fall in line like a young colt, right?
This is hardly impossible. Europe is becoming more united and may soon effectively be a single nation- -with a larger population and larger GDP.

I have known and been friends with numerous French people. It's the actions of the French government that is the problem. It often seems to act against the US simply to prove it is an independent government- -which is perfectly obvious. |
