"Niceguy767 - You wrote Yields can't be too bad if AMD is shipping record units...
Your logic leaves something to be desired. AMD is also manufacturing record numbers of wafers - in the industry, I believe the expression they use is "throwing silicon at the problem".

Monica, read my lips...Record AMD units shipped!!! No matter how much silicon INTC throws at the P4, they can't get the production right and consequently are shipping nowhere near record units...All that fab space and they still can't get it right!!!

"Otherwise, AMD should be making money. AMD management spends inordinate amounts of time touting their smaller die sizes and their large number of wafers used at their two wafer mega-plants."

AMD's cost structure is lower than INTC's otherwise AMD couldn't offer 1.2 gig Athy's at $91 vs. INTC's 1.2 P3 (INTC's corporate porker)at the comical price of $251)...By the way without corporate America paying usurious prices for p3's, INTC's margin would be lower than 48% and most definitely result in financials wholly immersed in red...

"Do the math - and you'll reach the only possible conclusion - AMD is running horrible yields. In fact, their yields are so low that they are abandoning their own manufacturing for some of their products and going to overseas manufacturers. That's hardly a testimonial to good yields - wouldn't you agree?"

or AMD has developed such good production control and are anticipating such accelerating marketshare growth that they have decided that now is the time to spread their wings...
