I don't think it answers anything about upfront vs. afterwards. To me, it says that the company wants to transition away from pulling shares out of thin air (diluting shares in the process), and the company wants to take a stand at some # of shares. There is a cost associated with it, and this cost can't be overlooked.

Jozef, I'm sure there is some cost and I suggested a couple of ways to express it, if not quantify it. The point I was making was to counter those who insist that there is loss based exclusively on the difference between this years stock repurchases and this years exercised options. Clearly the direct link is purely in the minds of those who profess it.
