An exceptional history and stimulating analysis by Lewis. It raised some questions in me that he did not address. Here's just a few:

1) If America became a paper tiger by pulling peacekeeper forces from Somalia, what did Kaddafi become after a limited assault caused him to stop directly targeting Americans? And what has the Taliban become after surrendering? Does the concept of a double standard have no name in Arab countries?

2) The three 'great' modern leaders have been Kaddafi, Hussein and now, Bin Laden. Two proved abject failures. Bin Laden has at least had some victories, mostly by attacking people who weren't looking. But he just got his first big defeat. How is it that defeat only raises their stature?

Bin Laden seems shrewd enough to know that big victories will now be expected of him. Which suggests there is at least, one more shoe to drop...
