In fact, Microsoft is one of the companies that has best backwards binary compatibility in their OS, compared to how complex their APIs are. Every time a bug is made, this has to be included in future versions in order to maintain compatibility.

Exact the opposite than what Linux does - on Linux, bugs are fixed and applications needing that facility simply require the bugfix to be implemented on the target system. This can be done because bugfixes can be applied automatically or very easy without paying for licenses.

But unfortunately, the market for Windows applications still assumes full binary compatibility and therefore Microsoft is forced to maintain that, also in Windows XP.
