I just can't see any way to defend it as fair or moral or the right thing to do.

Your feeling that our system is immoral and not right is quite common in this country, and that is one of our main problems in dealing with the rest of the world.

Fortunately, a lot of the rest of the world already knows that we are the right way to go, and that your view of us is the wrong one. Take a look at pictures of the Statue of Liberty erected in China during the student uprising. The students who built it had a good understanding of the moral basis of freedom that this country runs on.
