"The year's most intriguing column was Bill Buckley's April 27 "A Parable: The Tenth Man."

"Every evening 10 men meet for dinner, which collectively costs $100. The first four men pay nothing, the fifth $1, the sixth $3, the next three $7, $12 and $18. The tenth man pays the remaining $59. When the restaurant cuts the bill to $80, a furious fight develops over the fact that the 10th man gets $7 back. The first four bitterly complain that they didn't get anything back (even though they paid nothing to start with), the others that the 10th man got back more than they did. It is of course a parable of the liberal argument against the Bush tax cut."

The nine men formed an outraged mob, surrounding the tenth man. The nine angry men carried the tenth man up to the top of a hill and lynched him. The next night, the nine remaining men met at the restaurant for dinner. But when the bill came, there was no one to pay it.
