I see no reason to feel shame for acts that I have not contributed to.

Hi, Jewel. I think we get confused between "shame" and "guilt." I could be ashamed of something my child did (thank God I never have!), but I may or may not feel guilty also, depending on whether I think I contributed to the act in any way. We could feel ashamed about something our country did, but it would be extremely unlikely that we would have any reason to feel personally guilty about it. If you have been following the "A-bomb" thing (and you are lucky if you haven't), that is a case where I feel neither ashamed or guilty, since I sincerely believe the act was justified. Also, "shame" is very powerful word, and I think parents often use it too frivolously in disciplining children.
