"Saturated PC Market" Yup, that's what they said when 50% of american households had a telephone or a television. Sorry, but the consumer PC market is just getting going. Read about today's announcements by Compaq at news.com CPQ wants to be the leader not just among first-time buyers but also for folks shopping for that 2nd or 3rd PC. At these prices expect every college freshman to be packed off to school with one and every aspiring high-school student to expect one under the tree this Christmas. Not to mention what these prices will do for International sales where few consumers can afford traditional $2,000 and up PCs. Oh, and yes CPQ will be using this same level of packaging and cost efficiency to press its advance into the technical workstation business too. Margins? Better get real lean real quick if you want to compete in this business. But pay no attention to the fire in the basement. The view is wonderful from the high-end rooftop. Enjoy it while it lasts.
