re: On a more germane point, what do you think of AMD's disappearance from United States retail lately? Seems to me that bailing out of sight of the public eye in this country could be a rather dangerous strategy for the long term.

That depends on why.

from the recent news:
1)amd is expected to ship more chips this quarter
2)samsung seems to have problem getting athlons cheap
3)amd is gaining ground in commercial sector
4)amd is gaining at mobile market

seems like AMD is not hurting at all yet OEMs who followed intel might need to adjust their earnings downward

What's your take on 2)? :-)) Seems like it should end all the theories of channel stuffing by AMD in prior quarter. Intel channel stuffing is still an open issue
