EUROTECH, Ltd. Enters Explosives and Illicit Materials Detection Marketplace

FAIRFAX, Va., Dec 28, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- EUROTECH, Ltd., (Amex: EUO - news), Eurotech Ltd reported today on its progress to employ its Acoustic Core(TM) technology for explosives detection in the Homeland Security effort.

The company agreed to acquire additional illicit materials detection technology rights from Trylon Metrics for future non-monetary consideration. The company has submitted four proposals to the Department of Defense and performed two laboratory demonstrations of the technology for government contractors and Department of Defense personnel.

The proposals were submitted in response to Broad Agency Announcement solicitations issued by the Department of Defense. Each proposal addressed a unique application of the technology to respond to terrorist threats from illicit materials such as explosives, biohazards and nuclear radioactive compounds.

The submitted proposals to the Department of Defense for applications of the technology were focused on primary screening capabilities which are unique to Acoustic Core(TM) remote sensing.

The technology is capable of computerized automatic screening of containers, vehicles and humans for a broad range of illicit materials at high rates of speed, with low false alarm rates utilizing safe for human exposure low frequency acoustic energy. This makes the technology ideal for situations where large volumes of containers or humans need to be screened quickly and accurately.

Along with the Department of Defense proposals, the company performed demonstrations of the technology for the U.S. Air Force and a government contractor. The demonstrations were constructed to create an example of how the technology and associated physics would be utilized for the screening of automobile voids for explosives.

An additional proposed use of the technology is for automatic screening of large shipping containers. Enormous quantities of shipping containers pass thru numerous marine waterway and land ports through out the United States on a daily basis.

A proposed configuration of the equipment would permit screening of these containers while they are in motion being transported via crane, truck, or railcar. Primary screening of containers in this manner can then segregate suspicious containers for secondary screening, which can be performed by a hand held version of the remote sensing product.

In this manner Acoustic Core(TM) can be used in conjunction with present secondary screening methods to provide a fully integrated inspection and screening system.

Because Acoustic Core(TM) works by utilizing unique and independent acoustic signatures of illicit materials, it can be programmed to detect a large array of harmful substances which include numerous types of explosive, bio-hazardous and radioactive compounds.

Another proposed use of this technology is to screen carry on luggage for plastic explosives by retrofitting an Acoustic Core(TM) sensor into existing carry on luggage inspection systems. This would give these existent systems a new capability to automatically detect via computer the presence of plastic explosive without creating the need for replacement of thousands of installed systems nationwide.

The technology is potentially very flexible and can be used to safely screen humans for explosives by incorporating Acoustic Core(TM) into existent entry portal systems such as metal detectors, thereby permitting the screening for explosives without additional delays.

The most recent highly publicized attempt to explode a device aboard an aircraft now demonstrates that shoes may be used as a means of smuggling explosives on board an airplane. Acoustic Core(TM) is capable of being installed in the floor space of airline passenger entry portals to detect explosives in foot ware.

After almost a decade of intensive research Acoustic Core(TM) technology is poised to enter the security marketplace to fill high priority needs within the Homeland Security arena.
