I should have mentioned earlier that the tax rules on contributions are asymmetric: a check mailed on or before 12/31/01 is deductible in 2001, whenever the donee deposits it and whenever it's charged against your account; but if you donate by credit card, the charge has to be posted to your account by your credit card issuer on or before 12/31/01 to qualify for a 2001 deduction.

Since Lane Sheltercare is unlikely to have the electronic connection to the Visa etc. networks that would be needed (like those most retailers now have) even if it has Visa facilities, I've already fired off my check in the mail.
