Out of curiosity, I looked democracy up in my 1988 edition of Webster's...it also reads..."democracy the principles of the Democratic party." But it also lists under the definition of republican..."favoring a republic Republican of or belonging to the Republican party."

Since republic is defined as...a form of government in which the head of state is an elected president rather than a monarch/ a form of government in which the sovereign power is widely vested in the people either directly or indirectly through elected representatives...

and democracy states...a government by the people usually through elected representatives... I guess we can assume that Webster believes a Democrat is for democracy and a Republican is for the republic.

To my mind, the words are the same...it's whose leading and making the laws that makes the big difference.

I still am a Republican...(republican)...and am proud of it!
