Craig (and Art, Aus, Coots and the many other knowledgeable digital photograph mavens now or formerly on the thread) - answering a question with a non-sequitur question - what recommendations would any one make w/r/t a first digital camera for someone who is fairly experienced in SLR photography? A camera that I can grow with and upgrade (w/ CF or MM cards) but not necessarily feel constrained by as I get to know the composition, storage, cropping and migration issues.

For example, I saw pricing today in COMPUSA for a Nikon Cool Pix 885 (3.37 Megapixels;1.5"TFT LCD w/ 3X optical/4X digital zoom and 16MB CF) for about $600; an Olympus C-700 2.1 Megapixel with the same size LCD viewer and Smart Media memory capacity but at 2.1 Megapixels and 10X optical zoom. Quite a difference in specs for similar price.

Short recs or critiques gladly accepted.

PS Craig re. hard stock to hold, you've got that right. I remember adding significantly to my position in SNDK as it plunged into the 70's not so long after sailing into the 120's. That came after I established my core in the mid-40's in September 1998, I think it was, just after the Taiwan earthquake looked as though it might have wiped out foundry capacity. Sheesh.
