You're cynical! And not without reason. But it's the
content of the fund managers' arguments that matters, even more than their generally transparent motives in touting their (surely) existing holdings. I doubt any manager is thinking that a stock he holds and wants more of at today's prices is going to made cheaper by touting it to the press. I think he's right about those drillers in 2003 or maybe even by 3Q2002, but I'm with jim p on the sector. I'll only buy later because I believe:

Oil will get cheaper, substitution will be slight;

Gas in storage will be a constant drag on price this winter;

Demand won't pick up much in 2002 due to the economy, even if weather creates a 1Q02 blip;

Drilling, including developmental drilling of new or still-robust reservoirs in places such as Ladyfern, will add enough gas to offset depletion this year, when coupled with gas in storage; and given these factors

There's more money to be made elsewhere in the first half of 2002.

I bought back my covered calls, have dumped most tech shorts, and am ready for a tech rally in January!
