On the other hand, a lot of inventory was either liquidated or written off as well, so I would expect a little bounce in economic activities, not too much in sectors that serves the capex side of the business. Some of the leaders like INTC, IBM and MSFT will "manage" their results (either through actual good top lines or by other "accounting magic"), so I do not expect much of a warning season or major downside surprises (except, once more in the "capex" sector). The "looking forward" statements are anyone's guess, yet recent statistics do show some leveling and at least no more drastic declines. As for layoffs, that is often a "lagging" indicator, and these continue well into recovery of sales. The market has probably discounted both the positive and the negative of the equation. Thus, the only driving parameter should be the excess liquidity, imparting for a time a positive bias to the markets.
