Arafat says there is a 'truce' warns of 'limits to our patience'

By DPA

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat said late Sunday that there is a "truce" which the world should benefit from to establish peace in the Mideast region.

"We took the decision to impose a truce ... and our brothers in Hamas and Islamic Jihad cooperated on it with us ... but if the plots by [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon continue ... there will be limits to our patience ... " Arafat said in an interview with the Lebanese Broadcasting Cooperation (LBC).

"We have responded to the calls by the world community to pave the way for peace talks and to stop the Israeli excuses but if the Israelis continues in their assassination and massacres against our people we will not be able to continue our silence," the Palestinian leader said.

Hamas has agreed to temporarily stop its suicide attacks inside Israel.

The Palestinian leader said talks are still underway between the Israelis and the Palestinian parties but there are as of yet "no tangible results."

Referring to the convening of the Arab Summit in Beirut in March, the Palestinian leader said he will attend the parley and hold talks with Lebanese leaders.

Arafat left Beirut with his PLO fighters in 1982 after the Israeli invasion to the country.

"When I left Beirut then ... I said I was going to Palestine and I did come here despite all the obstacles that are facing me here," Arafat added. He promised all the Palestinian refugees living in the diaspora and the Arabs to come and pray in Jerusalem next Christmas and New Year.
